Workplace fitness facilities are easy to install and easy to leave unused. The ones that get used tend to share a few characteristics, and none of them are about having the newest equipment.
Location decides usage
A facility on the route people already walk gets used. One that requires a separate trip, a lift ride to a basement, or a badge someone has to request, does not. If the space cannot be central, make access as frictionless as possible.
Plan for short sessions
Most workplace training happens in 20 to 40 minutes around the working day. That favours equipment people can start using immediately without setup: cardio, selectorised strength machines, and a small functional area. Complex free-weight setups suit dedicated gyms more than office facilities.
Changing and storage are part of the facility
Showers, lockers and somewhere to leave a bag are frequently the deciding factor in whether people train before or during work. A modest gym with good changing facilities beats a large gym without them.
Design for the least confident user
The people who benefit most are often the least experienced. Clear instructions on machines, sensible layout, and equipment that is obvious to operate all widen the group who will actually use the room.
Noise and neighbours
In fitted-out office buildings, impact noise travels. Flooring specification, equipment placement and choosing lower-impact options where needed will prevent complaints from the floors below.
Budget for the running, not just the fit-out
Equipment in shared use accumulates hours quickly. An annual maintenance contract keeps machines available and extends their service life, and should be planned alongside the installation rather than after it.
